Seminar on Drug Abuse Prevention at Punjab Group of Colleges



A seminar on "Drug Abuse Prevention" was conducted for the students of Punjab Group of Colleges on 15th March 2011, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The seminar was held by Aghaz-e-Nau in collaboration with Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) and Punjab Group of Colleges. Brig. Afzal Shahid, Force Commander, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), Punjab joined the event as a Chief Guest to grace the occasion with his presence.


Comparing was carried out by Nida Asghar, one of the students of Punjab Group of Colleges.


Welcome Note, a brief introduction of Aghaz-e-Nau (AeN), Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) and Punjab Group of Colleges (PGC) was given by Hayyab Tariq.



A presentation was given by Ms. Maria Ali, Drug Demand Reduction Officer (ANF, Punjab). She discussed the classification of drugs, history of different drugs, how drugs are used and hazards of drug abuse.




short play on “Drugs Kill” was performed by the students of Punjab Group of Colleges. It was a story of a boy who belonged to a rich family but always felt neglected and rejected. His negative feelings and peer pressure caused him to use drugs and his parents remained ignorant of his drug addiction. He started missing his college and finally developed health problems. The play ended with a message that “Drugs can Cause Premature Death”.


The play was followed by a poem by Ms. Sumaira Shahzad, Clinical Psychologist (AeN). In her poem, she encouraged all the students to help other students stay away from drugs.



The program ended with the address of Chief Guest, Brig. Afzal Shahid, Force Commander, (AN F, Punjab). He delivered a very informative and heart touching address. He explained that drug addiction is a serious problem having serious problems not only for the person who is using drugs but for the family as well. He shared a story of a father whose son was dependent on hash and discussed painful feelings of the father.
Then he came down to “Role of ANF” and he mentioned that ANF is working with five objectives with special focus on “Drug Supply Reduction” and “Drug Demand Reduction”.

In Drug supply reduction, he discussed Law enforcement, Punishments and Seizures. He also mentioned that drugs come from Afghanistan and synthetic drugs come from western countries and distributed by a very well organized network. He mentioned that ANF is working hard for drug supply reduction through different means. At the same time, it is important to work on drug demand reduction.

While discussing drug demand reduction, he gave an example that after the World War-II when there was no sugar and as a result there was no demand of sugar. So, if there is no supply of drugs then there will be no demand for drugs.
He further discussed that ANF; Punjab is working to create awareness against drug abuse in collaboration with 300 NGOs in major cities of Punjab including, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad. He also mentioned that drug use causes dependency and other issues and leads towards premature death.
He also mentioned that the role of youth in drug abuse prevention has a very important role and said that cooperation is needed from the educational institutes and young people. He further reinforced that young people can play a vital role in drug abuse prevention by gaining knowledge and passing it on to others.
He was thankful to the team of Aghaz-e-Nau and Punjab Group of Colleges for organizing a seminar on drug abuse prevention.
